If a person spends enough time dealing with the UNIX operating system, s/he will eventually come into contact with a network. The earliest introduction generally is the greatest of the "killer apps": electronic mail. Later, remote access becomes a priority, followed closely by tools such as finger(1) and talk(1). Of course, the World Wide Web explosion in the mid-1990's has had its own influence on network fascination.
